Steam Deck: dynamic synchronization allows switching between Deck and PC

25.01.2022 289

A few weeks after the launch of Steam Deck, Valve has announced the dynamic Cloud synchronization feature. Thanks to it, players will be able to switch between Deck and a PC and continue playing uninterrupted, without having to worry about exiting the game to activate the synchronization of saves.

Many gamers will take advantage of Steam Deck's sleep feature to break their sessions without exiting the game, as is also the case with other handheld consoles, such as Nintendo Switch. And that's where the new free feature added to Steamworks comes in, "with dynamic Cloud synchronization, Steam will automatically upload all edited game data saved to the Cloud before the device goes into standby mode. At this point, users can resume gaming on any PC, laptop, or different device. Additionally, Steam will automatically download all saved game edits when users return to Steam Deck and reactivate the device."

As the post on Steam explains, the dynamic sync feature is not mandatory for console users but is highly recommended to get the best experience possible. With the option disabled, in fact, players every time will be asked to close the application on Steam Deck when they switch to another device or to continue without loading the latest progress.

Moreover, the feature is free but not automatic, so developers will have to enable it manually for their games through Steamworks, taking advantage of some new APIs. For more details on this, we refer you to the dedicated article on Steam.

Meanwhile, the first 38 "verified" games for Steam Deck have been unveiled, including Death Stranding, Dark Souls 3, and Sekiro.
