Nvidia holds 80 percent of the GPU market shredding AMD and Intel

Jon Peddie Research's analysis of the PC video card market paints a picture clearly in favor of Nvidia, which holds 80 percent of the market share against the 20 percent left to competitors, and this within a particularly bad second quarter of fiscal 2022.

According to analyst reports, Q2 2022 saw a 22.6 percent drop in shipments and sales of new discrete GPUs for PCs, in a generally negative quarter for hardware sales. However, even within this rather dark landscape Nvidia saw its market share rise from 75% to 80%.

This is a return to the position of power already seen in early 2021, with AMD instead seeing a decline in its situation from 24 percent to 20 percent of the GPU market as a result, while Intel is practically still too small in this sector to have a say, remaining around 1 percent.

The decrease in sales recorded for this quarter is the steepest among those averaged over the past 10 years.

AMD's desktop hardware unit distribution decreased 34 percent from the previous quarter and 5 percent from the previous year, while Nvidia's hardware distribution decreased 19 percent from the previous quarter and conversely increased 3 percent from the previous year.

Nvidia maintains and strengthens its dominant position in the PC discrete GPU market in the second quarter of fiscal year 2022 by reaching 80 percent market share, which brings it closer to true dominance as it awaits the launch of next-generation cards with the RTX 40 on the one hand, which is expected to be unveiled on September 20, and the RX 7000 RDNA 3 on the other.
