Mobile games: nearly 230 million active players by 2021 in the U.S. and Canada

The NPD Group has reported some updated mobile game usage data regarding the gaming market in North America, reporting 228.7 million active players between the U.S. and Canada during 2021.

Relayer, the demo

Although this is an impressive number, it represents a drop from what was recorded in 2020, albeit a rather tenuous one. The number of active gamers on mobile platforms dropped by 4% compared to the previous year, again according to data provided by NPD Group in collaboration with Sensor Tower.

This variation, according to analysts, would be related to a new settlement of the users' gaming habits after the lockdown periods that took place during the previous year. After the peak recorded, the amount of active users is normalizing on slightly lower but more stable numbers, it seems.

With the reduction of restrictions, the consumption of mobile video games seems to have decreased, particularly in terms of downloading new titles and the amount of time spent on them on average each day. Having said that, it remains an impressive user base, which still has possible growth margins and still only represents the North American region, therefore a small part compared to the entire market.

It seems that the most popular genres used by gamers on mobile platforms are puzzles, strategy games, and puzzles, which saw a 54% growth over 2020.
