Final Fantasy 16: dubbing will be in British English...so as not to offend Americans

The characters in Final Fantasy 16 will be dubbed in British English and not with the universal American-style English. The confirmation came from producer Naoki Yoshida, who also explained why: paradoxically, he does not want to offend American players.

In an interview with Dengeki Online, translated by the ever-reliable @aitaikimochi, Yoshi-P explained that Final Fantasy 16 will be voiced exclusively by British actors as the developers fear that American gamers hoping to savor a game set in a European-style medieval fantasy world might be disappointed.

"Although the script is written in English, we made sure not to include any American accents," Yoshida said. "We decided this to prevent American users who will play Final Fantasy 16 from getting upset, saying something like 'I wanted to play a game set in a medieval fantasy Europe, but why do all the characters speak in American English?' To avoid that, we made sure that all dialogue was recorded using British English.

That Final Fantasy 16 is dubbed in British English is thus a stylistic choice made to better represent a European-style medieval fantasy. This is not the first time Square Enix has placed a certain amount of care in such details. Final Fantasy 9, for example, although lacking dubbing faithfully represented the various Japanese dialects (later adapted into Italian ones in our shores) to characterize the game's colorful cast of characters in an original way.

Final Fantasy 16 will be available during the summer of 2023 for PS5. Also Yoshida these days revealed that he hopes to make a demo of the game before it debuts in stores.
